Floorstanding Speakers

• What room size do I need for floorstanding speakers?
Floorstanding speakers are best suited to rooms of 20m² or larger. In smaller rooms, extended bass output creates low-frequency build-up that is difficult to control. The Wharfedale Diamond 12.3i and EVO 4.3 suit medium rooms of 20–35m². The Wharfedale Linton 85 and Dovedale suit larger rooms of 30m² and above.
• What is the best floorstanding speaker under $2,000 in Australia?
The Wharfedale Diamond 12.4i (AU$1,499/pair) offers exceptional value — a four-driver floorstander built on Wharfedale's award-winning Diamond 12i driver technology. The Wharfedale EVO 4.3 (AU$2,499/pair) is a step up in resolution and cabinet finish. Both are exclusively available in Australia through Audio Visual Revolution with an Australian warranty of up to 3 years when registered with AVR.
• How much amplifier power do floorstanding speakers need?

Speaker Range	Minimum Power	Recommended Amplifier	AU Price
  Diamond 12.3i / 12.4i	50W/ch	Audiolab 6000A	AU$1,199
  EVO 4.3 / 4.4	70W/ch	Audiolab 7000A	AU$1,799
  Linton 85 / Super Linton	80W/ch	Audiolab 9000A	AU$3,499
Dovedale / Elysian	100W/ch	Quad Artera Stereo	POA

• Do floorstanding speakers need a subwoofer?
Most quality floorstanding speakers in the AU$1,000–$5,000 range reproduce bass down to 35–45Hz — sufficient for most music. A subwoofer is generally not needed unless you listen to bass-heavy electronic music or use the system for home theatre. Adding a Velodyne subwoofer can work well at a low crossover of 40–60Hz without disrupting the floorstanders' natural bass presentation.
• How far from the wall should floorstanding speakers be placed?
  1. Start at 60cm from the rear wall as a baseline for rear-ported designs like the Wharfedale Diamond 12.4i.
  2. Increase distance if bass sounds boomy — more distance from the rear wall reduces boundary bass reinforcement.
  3. Toe in toward the listening position at approximately 15–20 degrees for optimal stereo imaging.
  4. Experiment in 10cm increments — small changes in placement produce audible differences in bass tightness and soundstage width.
