Castle Acoustics was founded on 3 September 1973 in Skipton, North Yorkshire — established by William Escott and John Collinson, both formerly of Wharfedale, along with a small group of senior engineers who had spent their careers at the same brand. The name and logo were taken from Skipton Castle, the 11th-century fortress that dominated the North Yorkshire market town where the company was born. From its founding, Castle's philosophy set it apart from contemporaries: every component — drive units, crossovers, and hand-veneered cabinets — was designed and manufactured in-house rather than sourced from third-party suppliers. This integrated approach allowed Castle engineers to develop cabinets and drivers in tandem, optimise crossovers with fewer components, and maintain quality control across the entire product. Castle joined the IAG Group in 2006, alongside Wharfedale, Audiolab, Mission, Quad and Leak. The Windsor Series marks Castle's return to UK manufacturing. Built at IAG's 9,000 square foot production facility in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, the Windsor Earl and Windsor Duke are the first Castle speakers in many years to carry a Made in Britain designation — and the most ambitious Castle products in a generation. Acoustic and industrial design was led by Karl-Heinz Fink of Fink Team, one of Europe's most respected loudspeaker designers. Development began in 2020 and spanned two years of engineering and listening trials. The cabinet construction uses dual-layer MDF panels separated by a specially engineered acoustic adhesive developed to damp resonance in the critical midrange frequency region, combined with point-to-point bracing for low-frequency rigidity. Veneers are hand-selected and hand-finished in architectural-grade walnut or mahogany, sourced from sustainable forests — no two pairs are cosmetically identical.
