Why do bookshelf speakers need dedicated stands?

Speaker stands position the tweeter at ear level when seated — typically 90–100cm — which is critical for correct stereo imaging and soundstage. Placing bookshelf speakers on furniture significantly degrades bass definition, imaging precision, and stereo width. A quality Mountson stand is one of the most cost-effective acoustic upgrades available for a bookshelf speaker system.

How do I calculate the correct stand height?

Measure your seated ear height from the floor — typically 90–105cm for most sofas.Measure from the speaker base to the tweeter centre.Subtract step 2 from step 1. This gives your ideal stand height.Select the nearest Mountson stand height — available in multiple heights to suit most listening positions.

Should I fill speaker stands with sand?

Yes — filling hollow stand columns with dry sand or steel shot significantly increases mass and damps internal resonance, reducing stand-induced coloration and tightening bass response. Use dry play sand or steel ballast shot. Seal the fill port securely after filling. This is a low-cost upgrade that produces a meaningful acoustic improvement.
